Celebrating Older Americans Month 2025: “Flip the Script on Aging”

Every May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month (OAM) — a time to recognize the contributions of older adults, highlight important aging trends, and reaffirm our commitment to supporting the older adults in our communities.

At Legacy Home Health Care, we are proud to join in celebrating the resilience, wisdom, and vitality of older Americans. This year’s theme, “Flip the Script on Aging,” encourages all of us to challenge outdated stereotypes and embrace the countless opportunities that come with growing older.

Words Matter: Rethinking How We Talk About Aging

The words we use shape our perceptions. Small shifts in language can have a big impact. For example, rather than saying, “She still drives,” we can simply say, “She drives.” Words like “still” can unintentionally reinforce ageist assumptions. This May and beyond, let’s be mindful of our language — and honor the full lives and capabilities of older adults without caveats.

Lifelong Learning: Celebrating Curiosity at Every Age

Learning doesn’t stop with age — it evolves. Adults over 60 are now one of the fastest-growing groups of online learners! Whether it’s mastering a new language, learning technology skills, or exploring creative arts, lifelong learning empowers older adults to stay engaged, connected, and mentally sharp. Let’s celebrate the pursuit of knowledge at every stage of life.

Moving with Purpose: Physical Activity for Every Generation

Staying active is crucial for maintaining strength, balance, and independence. Whether it’s yoga, dancing, hiking, or a simple daily walk, movement helps keep us vibrant and healthy. Aging does not mean slowing down — it means finding new ways to stay strong and energized. Seniors who need support through physical therapy to maintain an active lifestyle can receive in-home that are tailored to their specific needs through Legacy Home Health Care.

Thriving, Not Just Surviving

Many chronic conditions once thought to be a “normal” part of aging can be prevented or managed through healthy nutrition, regular exercise, lifestyle choices, and community support. Aging well is not just about living longer — it’s about thriving at every stage of life. Legacy’s Pathways To Independence help seniors manage or prevent many of these chronic conditions such as low vision, hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Our goal at Legacy Home Health Care is to help our patients remain safe at home. Our Pathways to Independence make that goal a reality.

Honoring Caregivers: The Heart of Independent Living

During Older Americans Month, we also honor the incredible work of family caregivers. Today, 53 million Americans provide an average of 24+ hours of unpaid care each week — saving the U.S. an estimated $600 billion annually. Their tireless efforts allow millions of older adults to live with dignity and independence.

Reframing Aging: Ending Ageism Together

The National Center to Reframe Aging (NCRA) has been flipping the script on aging for years by promoting a more complete, equitable story about aging. Their tools and strategies help shift public conversations, focusing on the strengths, contributions, and diversity of older adults. Their YouTube Channel has many resources including a short video, Frame of Mind: The Why and How of Reframing Aging, to learn why our incomplete understanding of aging perpetuates negative stereotypes of older people and how we can do something about it by changing the way we communicate about aging.

At Legacy Home Health Care, we are committed to supporting older adults in living their fullest, healthiest lives. This May, let’s all take a moment to celebrate the remarkable individuals who enrich our families, communities, and nation — and pledge to “Flip the Script” on aging!
